Health care in Asmara
Eritrean achievements in the area of health care is
impressive. Medical care is improving rapidly in Eritrea, new hospitals and health centers are opened every
year.
Modern facilities may not always available outside Asmara.
Qualifications of a drugstore owner are not always clear.
In case of doubt consult a doctor.
Basic non-prescription medicines are available in Asmara, but the selection is not large.
Supplies of medicine can be irregular. Visitors should bring a supply of any necessary drugs and prescriptions. The
pharmacy with the widest selection of medicine is Pharmacy No1 near the central
post office of Asmara.
Tampons are not always available and the sanitary napkins often are of poor quality.
It is advisable to bring your own supply.

NOTE: Take some extra Paracetamol or other pain-killer with you when traveling
to Eritrea. A lot of people cannot afford medicine. It is an excellent gift if
you want to surprise friends or want to reward a service.

The Orota Referral Hospital constructed in cooperation with the
Peoples’ Republic of China (2003). The hospital has 200 beds
and gives medical services to people from all over Eritrea with
critical condition. The hospital also employs foreign and local
specialists for complex surgeries and coordinates the various
hospitals in Asmara such as the pediatrics hospital, maternity
hospital, Berhan Aini Eye hospital, St. Mary hospital and others.
It is fully computerized and hosts the National Health Library.

Health Centers in Asmara deal with vaccinations, wound dressing,
anti-conception, ante-natal care and minor ailments and surgery.

Under the Italian colonial rule it was known as "Regina Elena
Hospital". Under the rule of Haile Selassie it was known as
"Itega Menen", which was the name of Haile Selassies wife.
