Asmara Eritrea - May 21st 2003
Asmara is ready for the celebrations. Hundreds of Eritrean flags, painted shop windows, posters, illuminated streets. I walk from the Corea Housing Complex to Sembel. I took a lot of yellow tennis balls with me on this trip. I hand them to the smaller children.
A police man and woman come to me. I have to follow them to answer some questions. They question the validity of my visa. I explain April 1st is the date of issue of the visa and not the date of entry. It is valid one month after May 8th, the entry date.
They apologize and explain that a lot of foreigners make video of things that have nothing to do with tourism. I think they are referring to their police station. I explain I was making video of the children. It is another warning not to picture or make video of the military or the police.
I have lunch in Snack bar Cathedral. Two Eritrean girls and two boys share my table. They test my knowledge of Tigrinya. One of the girls asks my to take her to Holland. I tell her Eritrean Airlines allows 40 kilo's of luggage only, so she will have to lose some weight. They appreciate the joke and get the message.
When I want to pay for my lunch, it is already paid. By the Eritrean youngsters that just left the snack bar! I feel ashamed.
In the evening there is performances of various military bands on stages in the main street of Asmara. I enjoy the music and the dancing that is lasting until midnight.
