Asmara Eritrea - February 07 2017

 

Today I will have some rest, which means I will just walk the streets of Asmara and bring the last gifts to the various offices and people who assisted me in May 2016, especially Oasis Travel. They invited me to join them to Keren and Kohaito in 2016. Adiam introduces me to the current Oasis team, who are all in the office today: Yirgalem and Aster (ticketing), Saba (tour operator) Tecle (driver) and Filmon (accountant). Adiam wants me to meet Dawit Berhane, who is a freelance guide and organizes hikes in the Asmara area:

Eritrea is a wonderful birdwatching destination. Eritrea hosts an abundance of birdlife with its varied habitats, some resident year-round, others seasonal. More then 500 species have been identified, including the rare blue saw-wing. Dawit knows the trails and pathways to spot them. He hands me his flyer. I promiss to add it to our Eritrrean information pages.

I am very happy to meet Dawit. I met him years ago when he was accompanying an artist at an exhibition. Dawit speaks pecfect English and he can organise a tailor made hike (more than 20 possible destinations). I only have to specify my wishes (I chose the landscapes, because my eyes are not made for bird watching, and I am a bit afraid to hike into the mountains alone, as I do not know the directions. Dawit will prepare a hike with me tomorrow, on my request, as my agenda is still empty. We agree on the price and we will meet at the Oasis office at 8:00.

The afternoon is for the visits to travel agents, hotels and restaurants for price updates.
