Asmara Eritrea - May 31 2009
At 5:30 AM I sneak out of the house of Afworki and Hansu with my rucksack and a large bottle of mineral water, that I stored in the freezer yesterday.
When I arrive at the bus station at 6:00 AM, there is a long queue of people waiting for the bus to Asmara. I choose a position on one of the sidewalks, hoping for small minibus that will bring me to Asmara before noon.
A large Italian bus arrives, and people make a run on the entrance. Since I am very close already, I am the first to grab the bus, and I decide not to give up my number one position.
But the driver keeps the doors closed. After a while it becomes clear to me, that he will take only passengers from the queue, and I will be the number last to get in.
But with a lot of luck and help of the Keren police and the other passengers, I do get a seat in this 7:00 AM bus to Asmara, so I am well in time for my appointment today.
Daniel invited me to witness a wedding in Tiravolo where his brother Berhe will marry Lemlem.
After breakfast & lunch in a Pastry and a fresh up in our Asmara apartment and changing clothes, I walk to Tiravolo. The invitation says the wedding will be next to the Yesus Church, so it is easy to find.
Again the welcome at the wedding is extremely friendly. Haile, my brother in law is one of the embelta players and he introduces me to the other artists.
At the wedding I recognize at least a dozen other familiar faces, which makes me feel very comfortable.
We eat, we drink, we chat, we dance, and have fun.
